What To Make Free With 1 Caron Cake

Hello and welcome to Mean solar day 2 of my 12 Days of Christmas. Today I'yard going to share with yous some easy Caron Cakes 1 Skein projects to crochet.

Caron Cakes seems to be the yarn of the season. There is a lot of hype and popularity around this new yarn. And so many people were raving about it. They are a Michaels exclusive.

It's not that cheap but Michaels finally had a skillful sale on it sometime last fall and I caved and bought a few cakes – ii regal (because that is i of my favourite colours) and a neutral colourway. I rarely buy yarn without a project in mind, and then these take been sitting in my yarn basket for a while.

Caron Cakes is a lovely, soft yarn.  It is an acrylic and wool alloy. It'south not the scratchy kind of wool either, which is overnice because you become the warmth without it irritating those with sensitive pare.  As the yarn is hand launder, I consider it a very decadent yarn – something special and not necessarily for children (I don't accept fourth dimension to hand wash my kids' stuff) and then for me, I wanted to use them for very special projects. In that location are, even so, some lovely children'southward patterns out there that use this yarn.

I besides thought that it was important that I find the right pattern that not only showcased the colours and the colour changes but that given the price, I wanted pocket-sized projects that didn't apply too much yarn. How frugal could I be with this yarn? I wanted to get the almost out of these skeins.

The reply was i skein projects. One skein projects are bang-up. They are economic and yous don't have to worry nigh joining yarn. They are ordinarily quite quick and easy to do as well.

Caron Cakes 1 Skein Projects #1 – Desert Winds Scarf

Recently, I've had to deal with my mom having some health issues. My mom is the strongest person I know. She has been with me through some difficult times and looking back, I don't know what I would have done without her. So now, seeing her experience some health problems has been quite challenging for all of u.s..

Over the past few months, I have had to take fourth dimension off and so that I could exist in the hospital with her, as well as for various doctor appointments and tests. And then a lot of crocheting went on during that time.

Lucky for me, in addition to having a bully and supportive mom, we likewise have a very supportive church family. Many people are praying for my mom and her health and it really does help me feel better.

Two particular ladies (a mother and a daughter) have always been supportive of me and my family. Last jump, I made the mother a virus shawl in order to evidence my appreciation. Now information technology's fourth dimension to make something for the daughter. I didn't want to make the aforementioned thing – I wanted something different. I consider a triangle scarf to be a flake more versatile, considering that not anybody likes to put something over their heads.

The Make & Practice Crew Web log posted a squeamish, modern-looking scarf made out of 1 skein of Caron Cakes. You tin can notice the pattern here. She used the Buttercream colourway, while I had the Boston Cream ane. Both are quite similar – neutrals featuring beiges and cream.

The design is like shooting fish in a barrel to follow. It has a ii-row repeating design of DCs. As the blueprint advises, I used a 5mm crochet hook for this. One time yous know the pattern, it's i of those things you lot tin practice without having to refer to the pattern frequently. This was an easy pattern for me to work on while sitting in the hospital with my mom.

I wanted to make the scarf look a little more than finished, so I just added a tassel on each end.  I simply wound the yarn around an old DVD case and attached it to the scarf ends. I think this adds a nice finishing touch. I fabricated a video on how I fabricated these tassels, forth with a unlike type of tassel coming upward.

Caron Cakes ane Skein Projects # ii – Puff Sew together Hats

It seems that every autumn, there is a popular pattern for a crocheted chapeau or beanie. This year, it seems to be the puff run up version.

My mom is great about helping me await after our pup, Barry. On days I don't take Barry to work with me, I leave him with her. She walks him and feeds him and takes good care of her "grand-dog". As the weather is cooling down, I thought I would make my mom a hat to wear as she walks Barry. I have toyed with the idea of making her a hat before, but she is very particular about what she wants and up until a year ago, I wasn't too sure how to give her what she wanted. A year later, I at present feel that I have that much more experience and expertise that I tin finally give her what she wants.

She doesn't want a hat likewise tight and too snug on her head. Tight hats give her headaches and she wants to exist warm but doesn't want to mess up her hair. She likewise wants to exist able to embrace her ears to go on warm.

Beanies tin can be made in a couple of ways. You tin simply make a rectangle and sew together it together to make a hat. More than commonly, nevertheless, is to work in the round.

Yous tin can make a beanie from the top down. You first with a small circle and gradually increment to a certain diameter and and then you continue that stitch count until you lot reach the desired length and then finish it off with a ring. You tin too make a beanie by starting at the bottom by making the ring showtime. And then you would continue up, thereby making a square until you reach the desired length. Then yous would assemble the top edge in to close it up.

More often than not, from my experience, working from the bottom up yields a looser fitting hat every bit at that place is no subtract at the tiptop. The gathering at the summit border creates more space and room at the elevation of the beanie. This is the way I needed to make my mom's lid. I also fabricated it long – like a slouchy beanie, and so that she would accept the looseness which would not mess up her hair as well much.

For this pattern, I made the band vertically. I got the idea from Vickie Howell'south design, the Urban Jungle Crocheted Slouchy Beanie, institute here on Ravelry. Her puff run up consists of nine loops on the hook. You tin can also make a puff stitch with just vii loops on your hook. The more loops, the bigger the puff. Both work well.

I purposely started my caron cake with the darkest color as I wanted it to get lighter every bit I worked my fashion up. I actually like the ombre issue of this yarn. Some people don't similar the sudden color changes – yes, it'south hard to make it alloy, only it'due south one of those things that usually merely the crocheter notices. I like to end off my beanies with a pom pom. For this style of construction (working from the bottom up), I experience that the pom pom covers up the gathering at the pinnacle. The gathering does make a smoothen and even acme and then the pom pom helps that.

I decided to brand myself a matching lid, but personally, I adopt a more fitted chapeau. For my beanie, I used a complimentary blueprint from B Hooked Crochet, which can be plant here.  This design works from the top downwardly. I volition admit that I had to stop and restart this projection a number of times in order to get information technology the way I wanted. I sized downward a hook in order to make the puffs closer together. In order to accommodate my hook modify, I had to insert a row afterward row 5 as follows:

Row 5.5 – Make ane pf run up in the first 9 ch ane gap spaces, make ii pfs in the next space. *Make one pf stitch in the next ix ch i gap spaces, brand 2 pfs in the adjacent infinite. Repeat from * and join with a slst. (33 sts)

I wanted to endeavor something different for the ring and then I just did rows of sc. I did crook and skipped to the darkest colour and finished it off with a round of sc in the darkest imperial.

Caron Cakes 1 skein Projects #3 – Granny Foursquare Scarf

I still had a fair corporeality of yarn left from making the beanies. I used separate cakes for each beanie (because I wanted a certain colour gradient) and and so I had 2 partial cakes. I probably could have made both hats out of i skein. I decided that I would brand my mom a matching scarf. Like the previous scarf recipient, my mom doesn't like putting things over her head, so I thought a triangle scarf would be best. I wanted to try something unlike from the Desert Winds scarf, notwithstanding it had to but use one skein or less.

And then I thought I would use the granny scarf design. The abrupt color changes seem to be somewhat masked past the pattern. There are a number of patterns out in that location – I looked at a few and they were pretty much yet and then didn't actually follow a design. I added tassels to this one as well as I really like the look of added tassels – I think it makes it wait more than polished.

Caron Cakes 1 skein Projects #4 – Triple Luxe Headband

Looking back, I had some of the buttercream colourway remaining and and then I made an ear warmer out of information technology. I'1000 not sure if I like the abrupt colour change on something so minor, but information technology did work and I had enough yarn. My go-to pattern for ear warmers is the Triple Luxe Headband on the All About Ami weblog which can exist institute hither. I really similar the knot in the headband. It's very like shooting fish in a barrel and quick to brand up. I've made a few of these headbands out of different yarn, namely Woolspun.

I had to alter the pattern, however, to compensate for the unlike yarn. I started with a FHDC row of 68 and went on from there. I also had to do more rows in order to get the aforementioned finished size.

Personally, I recollect a solid colour would wait meliorate – or at to the lowest degree if it were more than than ane color – a decent amount or a more than balanced colour scheme would exist preferable. That said, it doesn't look bad and I wanted to try it. It does get nicely with the scarf.
